Mouth Guards

Mouth Guards Geelong & Lara

Mouthguards can effectively protect teeth from impact during sport and teeth grinding.

Adult teeth are only available once and there is isn’t a spare set waiting to come through once a tooth becomes damaged. Athletes of all ages participating in a sport that carries a risk of a damaging knock to the face or head (while playing and/or training) should wear a mouth guard.  Such sports may include football, rugby, cricket, basketball, hockey and water sports.  A custom-made mouthguard is specially fabricated to your child’s teeth and will assist in cushioning a blow to the face that otherwise might result in an injury to the mouth or jaw.

What is a mouthguard?

Mouthguards are specifically designed oral devices that are made from a flexible yet super strong material. The aim of using a mouthguard is to protect the teeth from damage. A mouthguard from a sports store or local chemist won’t offer the same protection as a custom fitted one from your local dentist.

Mouthguard Options

Here at LARA dental, we offer custom made mouth guards to our patients. Custom made mouth guards are designed to fit your mouth seamlessly. It is made of flexible material which protects your teeth from impact during sport or physical activities.

The Australian Dental Association and Sports Medicine Australia both recommend custom-fitted mouth guards…… If you are a club looking to put in place a mandatory mouthguard policy, you are welcome to download this form endorsed by both the ADA and Sports Medicine Australia.

Having a custom fitted Mouth Guard while playing sport provides the best protection against dental injuries and help prevent and minimise damage from serious injuries such as:

  • Broken jaw
  • Fractured teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Knocked out teeth
  • Cut lips
  • Cut gums
  • Cut tongue

A custom-fitted mouthguard absorbs and spreads the impact, it is made in a Lab after your dentist/hygienist has taken an impression of your teeth and jaw.  A custom-fitted mouth guard is far superior to an over-the-counter mouthguard because it’s specially designed to fit the exact contours of your mouth, provide protection against impact, is resilient, balances your bite and allows speech and normal breathing. If properly used, stored, and checked by your dentist every year, a custom-fitted mouthguard could last several seasons.

Caring for The Mouthguard

Look after your mouthguard and it will look after your teeth. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Rinse the mouthguard in soap and warm (not hot) water after each use. Allow it to air-dry.
  • Disinfect the mouthguard from time to time with a mouthwash.
  • Keep the mouthguard in a well-ventilated plastic storage box when not in use. The box should have several holes in it.
  • Do not leave the mouthguard in direct sunlight, in a closed car or in the car’s glove box. Heat can damage it.
  • Make sure your mouthguard is in good condition before each use.
  • Ask your dentist to inspect your mouthguard at every dental check-up.
  • Replace a child’s mouthguard every 12 to 18 months, even if it appears to be in good condition.
  • Replace an adult’s mouthguard after dental treatment or tooth loss. Otherwise, it should last for several years.
